Are there times to best stay silent when you see something that is wrong?
Write a 4-6 sentence paragraph answering the above questions. You may choose to use specific details from the book to support your answer. Cite your book correctly.
Write two quality 2-3 sentence comments on two students from another school. Remember quality comments have specific details, do not just restate what the person already said, and challenge the student to think about their ideas on a deeper level or in a new perspective.
Proofread your work prior to submitting your responses.
No I do not think that there are times when you should stay silent when something wrong is happening. I believe that no matter the consequence that you impose on yourself you should always stand up for what is right. No one deserves to be discriminated or abused against. The right thing to do is to stand up for someone when they are being wrongfully abused by another per on. The implications that should not effect your decision to do so. It is never right to stay silent when you see something that is wrong.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Jackie, but what if the situation is particularly dangerous. I feel that if anyone is in a bad situation they should as a good person should step up and say something. But I ask you this what if the situation could be pointed at you if you said something, if your life could be in danger if you said something, would you still do the right thing or keep quite.
DeleteI agree with you Jackie, but what if the situation is particularly dangerous. I feel that if anyone is in a bad situation they should as a good person should step up and say something. But I ask you this what if the situation could be pointed at you if you said something, if your life could be in danger if you said something, would you still do the right thing or keep quite.
DeleteWhile I do agree on some points, I think that sometimes you can help them more by staying silent. What I mean is that how would you help them if your in the same boat they are?
DeleteI disagree with your viewpoints because don't you think that if you are threatened by someone that you should still speak up? What if you will be hurt if you speak up? I believe sometimes it is best to keep your mouth closed
DeleteSometimes, you should stay silent if it is in the benefit of yourself or others. It is not always safe to stand up, and harming yourself is not always a good consequence for standing up for something or someone.
DeleteI somewhat agree with your thoughts but I think that you should not sacrifice yourself. Would you get killed or badly injured to save another you don't even know? What if they are criminals or bad people, would you still risk your life for them?
DeleteI agree with you on some points of the paragraph. However, there are some times where you should stay quiet when your life is on the line.
DeleteIf the situation is life threatening you should choose the option to stay alive. Depending on who it is like your family or your very close friends.
DeleteI agree that no one deserves to be discriminated or abused. I think that there are certain situations though where there is no need for people to bud in. What would you do if there family arguing in public about divorce, or something along those lines? For me personally, I would bud out and let them figure it out by themselves or with a lawyer. What would you do?
DeleteI agree but at the same time I also disagree with you. If you are going to put yourself into life threatening danger for speaking up, then you should not say anything. But this is the only reason you should not say anything. I agree with you when you said that no one should ever have to be abused or discriminated against.
DeleteI agree with you, but for some situations you need to be aware of your life. You should not willingly put yourself in the way of danger to help someone else because you may hurt yourself or lose your life in the process. Like I said in my paragraph, there are certain people whose job it is to do so, like police and firemen and so on.
DeleteI both agree and disagree with you. I agree with the fact that you should stand up for what you believe in, however I disagree because if it is life threatening for you or someone else, then you shouldn't speak up about that.
DeleteTo a certain extent I agree with you Jackie, but sometimes speaking up immediately causes more problems. There are some instances where you must be silent now, but speak later for a more effective intervention. Also, if somebody else that you don't even know is in a precarious position that if you intervene; it will probably get you killed: Would you help? But if it was your family member you would be more inclined to help? I probably would.
DeleteI agree that standing up for what is right is a good choice. However, sometimes if you are in a near death situation speaking up might not be the best option.
DeleteI both agree and disagree with your post. I agree that it isn't right for someone to be discriminated against or abused. But, I disagree with the part where you said that you should always speak up no matter what the consequences. I think that if the consequence could harm you or someone else then you should stay quiet.
DeleteI agree and disagree with this statement. I agree that you should stand up for others when something wrong is going on. However, I think that some situations can put your life in danger and your safety should come first before doing what is right. Overall, I think that you have to look at the situation before taking action.
DeleteI agree and disagree with you. I agree with how you are strongly supporting the topic and have your points. I also agree with how you can stand up in situations that are right. I disagree with you as well because if you do stick up, you may threaten your life. Would you do it in that situation?
DeleteI agree and disagree with your statement. I think that standing up for others when they're doing something wrong is perfectly fine. I think in other situations, you are risking your life and I think you should have to think about if it would be better if you didn't interfere.
DeleteI both agree and disagree with your statement, Jackie. I agree with the fact that no one deserves to be treated poorly. Also, everyone deserves someone to stand up for them. However, I disagree that sometimes you should not stand up for people because you may be putting yourself or more people in danger.
DeleteI agree with your statement. I think that your examples were a lot more serious than others. I would not agree with you if it was a life threatening decision.
DeleteYou should not stand against evil in certain situations, Jackie. You could endanger more people by doing so, and cause more harm to the person doing wrong as well. You must use good digression when deciding whether to speak up.
DeleteI fully agree that you should do the right thing no matter the consequences. Even if something bad happens for doing the right thing, there has to be something good coming from that same decision.
DeleteI agree with this you should always do the right thing even if your reputation is harmed or the punishment for speaking up is bad. If you help someone when they need help, in a time that you need help they might help you too, remembering the time you helped them.
DeleteI also agree with you Jackie. I think that you should stand up but what if the situation could get you in trouble or put in jail. If somebody or something is getting bullied or abused then I think that the right thing is to stand up. I agree with you on that part. I think that there are sometimes where it is better off to stay silent unless. Otherwise you did a very nice job.
DeleteI partially agree with your answer, but have one major question about it. What if you could be severely injured or killed? Is risking your life worth reporting something wrong? Everybody has different views of what to do with your life, but if life could end over catching somebody doing something bad, I don't think that it is worth that consequence.
DeleteI disagree that there is never a time to not do the right thing, or to stand up for someone, Jackie. I think that depending on the situation, it is good to stay quiet. Sometimes, if you see a person getting in trouble, and then you speak up, it could also get you in trouble which wouldn't be good for you or the other person.
DeleteI do not agree with this, Jackie. I think that this could be very bad because what if it is a life threatening situation. I think that you should not always speak up, unless it is a situation you can make a positive difference in.
DeleteI disagree with you. If you are putting your life in danger it is not worth it. You should stay silent. You have to stop and think what will happen if I do this action. Even though you want to stop whats happening getting your self killed isn't the solution.
DeleteI agree with you for the most part. I just think if you are putting your life on the line and nothing is going to happen anyway what is the point. I do understand that the person would be dying standing up for something they believe in.
DeleteI disagree with what you say, you should not put your life at risk, it is not worth risking your life, even if you disagree with something. If you have to risk your life for something you disagree with, you should stay silent.
DeleteI do agree with you. People should stand up for what is right. Not saying anything could make the problem worse.
DeleteJackie, I couldn't agree with you any more. If there is a situation like that, no matter what is happening in that situation, someone should always stand up for the innocent person in that conflict.
DeleteI agree that standing up and doing what right is what people should do, but we have to think about the consequences of our actions. If you were going to be killed, you have think about how much you really want to stand up for that cause.
DeleteI think that standing up for someone is something you should do. Sometimes it is worth getting hurt to help someone but sometimes it was never you business, and was not worth getting hurt. I think you should think about the situation before you make your decision.
DeleteJackie, I agree that generally speaking you should stand up for what is right. However, if your words are only going to make matters worse and will not help the situation, it might not be worth speaking up.
DeleteI do not agree with you. If you say something and nothing comes out of it you could just be risking problems for you. You could even lose your life for nothing.
DeleteAlthough you imply very agreeable points, I disagree upon the fact that you should always stay silent. There are just some times when standing up, and speaking for what you believe in just might not be enough, or hurt the situation more than it will help the situation.
DeleteI agree except for you should stay silent when something could get you or someone else in danger. I think a good time to speak up is against bullying or abusive behavior, but not when there is a time when you should be cautious. I think that it can get out of hand sometimes even when people speak up against bullying! It all depends on the situation when you should speak up or quiet down. There are times for everything.
DeleteGood job, your paragraph is very good. Keep up the good work.
DeleteI feel that there is a need for people to speak up against things that they no are morally wrong. I believe that if the situation is safe enough to interfere, one should do so to show what type of person they are. No one deserves to be punished and harassed because of who they are as a person, but if the situation gets out of control to the point that your life could be in danger I feel that it is no longer your obligation to do the right thing because of the the life threatening situation. I use a series of questions in life to assure myself that I will always get out of situations like this safely, If I interfere, what are the outcomes? Can I deal with them? Will my life ever be in jeopardy? I feel that if I can answer these questions so that my life will not be in danger I will interfere and help the person in need, but if I answer those questions so that my life might be in risk I will seek help from others before interfering with the situation.
ReplyDelete"Interfere at your own risk."
I do agree with your points Tré, but if the person's life is in jeopardy, it's a life or death situation. They should ether speak out against their leaders or die. They would have died anyway. It makes sense for them to become passionate about their beliefs as it could change society. If it's a death situation (like the Holocaust), the protester has nothing to loose. There are never situations where you shouldn't speak about what you feel is wrong. You never know what the effects of your beliefs on society could be.
DeleteI think your comment was good but what would you do if it was your best friend?
DeleteI agree with some of your points, however if people were never to interfere in situations that were dangerous lost of conflicts would never be resolved. Imagine someone close to you was in danger. Would you just let it be because you were worried for your own well being or would you interfere and try to help.
DeleteI agree with this fully, however, unless they are going to die either way, then you should speak out. Also, you talked a lot about if YOU are in a life threatening situation, what if someone else was the person in the life threatening situation?
DeleteOverall, I do agree with you. However, what if you family was at risk. Are you saying that you should not help your family if you could die? What if your sister or brother was going to die? Would just stay silent and only think about yourself? That is selfish.
DeleteI really enjoy how you talked about asking questions to yourself to see if you should or should not do something. I do think, though, that sometimes, you need to put your life in jeopardy for the greater good.
DeleteI can agree with what you are saying. If you interfere it can make you loose friends or not have a good bond with you family
DeleteI agree with this, but what if it was your best friend, or your family? Sometimes, you need to risk your life if it was for someone you really care about. I think that sometimes, it would be better to risk your life for someone you care about than not do anything at all.
DeleteI agree that there should be people to stand up for things wrong. I do think that you should be safe about it when you interfere, but you shouldn't just not do anything. If you don't do anything, how can you expect someone else to stand up.
DeleteI definitely agree with you! People should never be harassed or abused because of what color or religion that they are, but if you are personally threatened by the person if you were to say anything, you should keep yourself safe first, and then worry about everyone else. However, I do not know how I would feel if it was my sister or my best friend that just got killed or abused, I would definitely want to try and do something about that. In the book though, nothing that they could say or do could prevent what was happening besides running away, so I would not want to put my life in danger any more than it already was by speaking out.
DeleteI totally agree with you. I also wrote along the lines that you should only interfere at your own risk. I mean no one wants to die, but sometimes dying for what you believe in is not always a bad thing.
DeleteI agree, I think that whenever you are thinking about standing up for someone, you should think about some things. I think that you should try to protect yourself, but I also think that sometimes it is worth getting hurt if you are helping people, but sometimes it is not always worth it.
DeleteI agree with you. The problem of sacrificing ones self is dangerous, especially if you are the only one with a voice in a certain matter, because you could easily lose it. However, if you have spoken up, and the world is informed, what would you do then? Nothing, because your life is on the line or something else to end the problem.
DeleteI do not think I could of said it better myself. "Interfere at you own risk" is a perfect way to put it. If you want to speak out, you can, but one should know the rewards, or the consequences of their actions.
DeleteI do think there are time where it is best to stay silent. I only think this because what good is it if there is a life threatening situation and you step up and say something/ do something, you will be putting yourself as well as the person who is already in that predicament in danger. I think it is wrong to stay silent in certain situations, but in others situations where more bad then good will come out of a situation I think it is best to stay silent, until there is per say more people to help. If something is happening that you can make a difference to without causing harm to yourself or others, you should speak up.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Arran, but if you see that someone in your family or your best friend is the person being wronged, then I believe you will feel differently on this subject. I like to believe I would be willing to die if I was helping someone in my family. But I also agree if it is not someone you know personally, it is better to keep you mouth shut.
DeleteI agree with you Arran, but if your family is being harmed, would you really still think the same way. I would not. It would be devastating for me to think that I could help my family but not do anything.
DeleteWhat you said is what I originally thought, but then I thought about it a little more and decided that you should always speak up. I really like how you would want to protect yourself and others before speaking up, which is admirable.
DeleteArran, I agree with you that sometimes the best option is to stay silent. However, if somebody in my family or somebody close to me were in trouble I would definitely stand up for them and speak up. I still agree though that sometimes staying quiet is the right way to go.
DeleteI agree with this statement. I think that at some times you should stand up for whats right, but your safety should come first. Overall, I think you need to read the situation before doing something.
DeleteArran, I agree with your statement in some respects. If someone I knew was being hurt I would definitely stand up for them. You would need to look at what was happening before you decide to either interceed or stay silent.
DeleteAndrew, I agree with you completely. If someone is being hurt you should help them, even if the risks are great. They need to know that someone is there for them.
DeleteI completely agree with you, Arran. You should put yourself first, even if it is someone you really care about. Like you said, if you speak out you might be putting yourself and everyone else you dragged in with you in much more danger than they were in before.
DeleteI agree with you when you said that you should be quiet when the effect is life threatening. I also think that it could be a very bad idea when this example comes into effect to get involved. Therefore, I agree with your statement.
DeleteI both agree and disagree with your answer. I think that if there is a situation in which people are in danger, you should speak out rather than keep quiet even if that means you will have a group of people helping. Except I agree with you about not putting yourself in danger.
DeleteI understand your point. Personally, I think you should always be able to speak up. However, like you said, sometimes it is safer to stay silent. Then, like you also said, there are situations in which it is better to speak up. All in all, I agree with you and think it totally depends on the situation.
DeleteI agree that there are certain times to stay quiet in certain situations, Arran. If it is a life and death situation, then speaking up could sometimes get you killed and the other person, so it could just be better to stay quiet.
DeleteI like your overall comment. I can tell you put alot of work into this.
DeleteWell said sir. Couldn't have said it better myself, but if you seek help from others, you could potentially put their life's at risk as well. If there was a possibility that you put your life as well as the other peoples life's that you asked assistance from, would you still ask for their help.
ReplyDeleteI feel that there is always a need for people to speak up for their beliefs. People should always be given the opportunity to give their opinion on what they think is morally right. If there own life is in danger, they should never be denied to speak what there mind. People deserve to have the right to be unique and different from the 'normal' race (in this case, the Germans). People should never be exterminated for being part of a 'different' ethnic group or religion. They should never be denied to speak about what they believe in. This will always help to give a variety of perspectives on actions taken by their leaders. I feel speaking about what is morally correct can spark better futures to providing fairness to all ethnic or religious groups. By speaking out, it can develop a countries thinking process by listening to the different perspectives and showing them what life it like for those people.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you that people deserve to have the right to be unique and different from normal races, as the Germans were discriminated in this book. However, I disagree that there is always a need to speak up for one's beliefs, and sometimes it could be dangerous.
DeleteI feel like that is noble, but think of the risk. I would not risk my life to save a stranger if I was extremely likely to get caught, but that is just me.
DeleteI feel that I would not risk my life for the sake of a random person that is in trouble, as weird as this sounds I would save myself to sacrifice myself for a family member instead of a stranger.
DeleteI agree with what you said by speaking up for what you believe in. I also think that sometimes keeping something to your self could save you from putting your self in danger.
DeleteI somewhat agree that there is always a need for people to speak. I dont agree with what you said at the end of your post. I think that if everyone that followed a religion spoke out about their religion when someone else did sometime from their religion, it would spark more conflict than it would solve.
DeleteI like the post but even though people have the right and ability to speak, it is not wise sometimes. A lot of people could get hurt of you try to defy their rules.
DeleteI agree with what you said. I think that you should almost always stand up for what you believe in. Unless it involves risking your life. Even if you are standing up for what you believe in, you should never risk your life.
DeleteI very much agree with what you said. I think that everyone should stand up for what they believe in. Your post made me get a whole new perspective of this topic.
DeleteI think that if someone truly believes that something is wrong then they should stand up for what they think and should voice their opinion, however there are certain boundaries that cannot be crossed like cultural practices or traditions that perhaps we don't agree with but to that culture are extremely important. However, in everyday life for us I think that definitely people should always let the person know if they are doing something wrong or tell them how you feel about it because alot of the time many people don't realize the extent of what they are doing or how it could impact the victim or anyone else in the situation. Obviously discrimination and prejudice are both things that occur daily and the persecutor should be informed that they are not acceptable, but if the situation is already being handled then it is not always necessary. Genocide however can take much more than one simple influence as it needs many people to come together against it and so yes while I think people should always state their opinions, it is always that persons decision as to whether they would give their life for another or whether they wanted to save their chance for another day or opportunity when their voice could have more of an impact and if they have a stronger argument later (for example writing a book etc. after the Holocaust).
ReplyDeleteI do understand why you think that you should stand up for what you think, but if you will be hurt by someone for saying something, I think it is best you keep you mouth closed. However, I do believe there are certain situations in which you should speak up.
DeleteI think that you made some very interesting points, I never considered the cultural boundaries theory. However, I disagree with how one influence could not make a difference as it is that one influence that brings the people together who make a cause the event to occur.
DeleteI understand where your ideas are coming from but if no one challenged peoples morals or ideas what would the world be like today? It would go completely against 80% of the things we've been taught in life. Of course discrimination and prejudice are both things that occur daily and that the persecutors should be informed of their wrong doings but what about if you were putting yourself in harms way just to protect something you believe in, would it still be worth it, possibly knowing you may not be alive to witness its effects?
DeleteI agree that you should voice your opinion and do the right thing. Doing the wrong or right thing has an impact. Hopefully when you are doing the right thing, there is a positive impact afterwards. But your argument on people's cultures makes me think for another second. I believe that one person can make an impact.
DeleteI agree that everyone has a right to state their own opinion and voice what they believe. I also liked your statement that you should not get involved in the situation if it is already being handled, this was a very good point and not something I had thought of before.
DeleteI agree with you Tate. Especially when you said traditions from other culture are different than yours. You can't try to change what you don't believe in especially when it is a tradition..
DeleteAfter reading your post Tate I think you made very interesting points. Such as traditions from other cultures are different than yours. Another point I thought you made a good point about was how you said you can not try to change what you believe in.
DeleteI think that there are times when you should stay silent and when you should speak up when something is wrong. If you tell the truth it could put someone in danger so you need to stay silent. When you believe someone is doing wrong to another person such as bullying, you should stand up and tell someone. When something is cautious and could get someone hurt you should keep quiet depending. on what the situation is and try to stay safe. Bullying is a good example of when you should speak up because it is wrong and if it is not stopped it can get out of control. When someone is singled out and is in danger by people looking for them you should stay quiet and keep that person safe from danger.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said completely.I do think though, that even when something that could hurt you is going on, you should at least step in and get help.
DeleteWhile I agree with your points, there is always the possibility that by covering for that person you may be hurting several other people and possibly someone else wold get blamed for something they did not actually do (in the example of bullying) However I totally agree with your idea that it depends on the situation and the extent of which people are involved etc.
DeleteIf you don't tell the truth when something is wrong, how are they going to know its wrong? Should you just continue letting them think that what they're doing is morally acceptable? I mean, if someone is in danger why by a passive bystander if you could do something that could potentially even save their life?
DeleteI think that there are definitely times that you should stay silent when you see something wrong. An example is when something horrible is happening and someone says that if you tell anyone they will hurt you. To be safe you definitely do not want to tell someone like an authority figure or cop. However, there are certain times you should speak up. For example if you someone doing something wrong in school, then that is a time when you should tell a teacher right away. In conclusion, there are certain times that you should just keep your mouth shut, and certain times where you need to speak up.
ReplyDeleteI think that it would the right decision sometimes if speaking out against an injustice could put you or your family in harm's way, especially if the situation is life or death, such as the Holocaust. Some people believe that you must always stand up for what is right, but I think it depends on the situation. Helping others is very important, but it is important to help yourself first, shown in "Put on your own mask before assisting others" in an airplane emergency. Worrying about others will not help them if you are put in the same situation.
ReplyDeleteThere are times to stay silent when seeing something is wrong as long as there is a reason to do so. If you are doing this to keep yourself or someone else out of harm, then it is okay to stay silent. In other cases, it is not right to stay silent when seeing something wrong, and it could seriously harm somebody mentally or physically. Standing up for someone or something could be unsafe, but if the consequences are positive, then they could help the situation which would be a great reason to stand up in the first place. In conclusion, it is best to stand up when you see something wrong if you can defend yourself and want to make a difference.
ReplyDeleteI feel that when a person is doing something bad you should turn them in. In the heat of the moment you should think and stay quiet. I would turn on someone if it could help me. I am a person who helps him self in fight or flight position. I will help friends and keep quite for them but, if it is a stranger I would turn on them.
ReplyDeleteI like the way you put that and I agree, totally. I think it was a good point of view how you said to stay quiet in the “heat of the moment” and I understand that. But why would you turn on a stranger?
DeleteThere are times when you should stay quiet and times when you should speak out. It really depends on the situation. Sometimes is not practical to speak out. The leaders of the group could get angry on everybody and more damage could be done. You are hurting more people in your attempt to save them. However, sometimes It could benefit the entire group if you speak up. The leaders could gain sympathy and give you free will. In conclusion, sometimes it could be beneficial to speak up, and sometimes the entire group could be affected if you speak up so it is wise to think about your actions before doing them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about there are times when to stand up fro what is right. You just have to think before you actually do it.
DeleteI feel that you have to know the situation very well. Sometimes it is better to stay silent because you don't know the whole situation. Other times though, the problem of the situation could be obvious, then I believe that someone should step in. I would say majority of the time though, someone should step in. Not fully put themselves into the problem, but to ask if everything is alright. Just to get some kind of understanding of the situation. I believe that if it is a family problem, there is no need to understand the situation. If it is a situation where it is a boyfriend and girlfriend, and one of them is abusive in public. Someone needs to step in to help that persons rights.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said. You should get your self involved depending on the situation. You should not just get your self involved in a situation that would make matters worse.
DeleteI believe that there are times when you should stay quiet when you see something wrong because it could possibly put you in harms way. If you see someone getting robbed you should stay out of it because you can get hurt or possible even killed. Although there are times when you should not stay quiet for example when you see someone lose their wallet and someone else picks it up, it is unlikely that anything bad will come of the situation so this is not the time to be a bystander. There are times when you should "mind your own business" and there are times when you should get involved. It is when you put yourself in harms way that it is a bad idea to get involved in the situation and it is best to stay quiet.
ReplyDeleteYes and No. There are times where you should stay silent and stand up for what is right. Bullying is something that everyone should stand up for. If you are being held hostage and the people have guns, you should not try to stop what is going on because you could get killed. You just need to be smart on when you speak up to certain people.
ReplyDeleteI think that there is a difference between standing up for something that is going on that is wrong, and something that is wrong with yourself. When something wrong is happening, like bullying, then yes of course you should step in and take action. Or if you see a robbery or other public crime, it is your duty to step in and call the police. But sometimes, when something is going on inside and a friend needs you, it is important that you put your feelings behind and think of others first. Otherwise, you should never stay silent. It is the law and morally right to essentially tell on violence if you see it happening. There are always those times when telling on someone is frowned upon, but if that person is hurting others in any way, they need to be stopped. Bullying is a serious example and has always been a problem among children today and in the past.
ReplyDeleteAlthough you should always stand up for what is right, I believe that there are times when you should keep quiet when you see something wrong. I say this because if you are in a life threatening situation in which when you speak up you could be killed. An example of this would be a hostage situation. If you are being help captive for something and someone is being executed if you speak up for them and try to defend them there is a chance that you will be killed as well. An example of when you should stand up for something wrong is when you see someone being bullied. There are also many other times when you should say something instead of keeping silent. Even though there are not many situations in which you should stay silent there are a few.
ReplyDeleteI feel you should not meddle in everything you see. If it is life threatening and could make the situation worse, like standing up to someone who is robbing your house as to calling the police. I also think that if you see someone in a situation that you don't about, I wouldn't jump in because if you don't know the details you shouldn't jump in.
ReplyDeleteI think that in most situations, if you believe in something a lot, then you should stand up for that situation. We have a right to speak up for what we believe in, as it says in the First Amendment, we have a right to freedom of speech. On the other hand, I also believe that there are certain boundaries that you should not cross. These lines are the point at which you were to put someone else or yourself in danger, then you shouldn't speak up.
ReplyDeleteI do think that there are some that you should stay silent when you see something is wrong. If you believe that you will be harmed in anyway, then you should absolutely keep it to yourself. I think that your health should stay a priority over someone else's health. If you believe that you will not be harmed in anyway, then you should definitely tell someone about this problem. This is why I think that you should protect yourself before helping someone else.
ReplyDeleteI think that you should not stay silent when when something is wrong. If something is wrong and you do not say anything the problem may never be resolved. I think that you should stand up and say soemthing other than being scared of it. Most of the time not saying something could be more harmful than saying something.
ReplyDeleteI think that you should not stay silent when when something is wrong. If something is wrong and you do not say anything the problem may never be resolved. I think that you should stand up and say soemthing other than being scared of it. Most of the time not saying something could be more harmful than saying something.
ReplyDeleteThere are times when its best to stay silent when you see something that is wrong. Sometimes when speaking up can put you in harm’s way you should stay silent and contact someone that can help. This way you can resolve the issue but you are also safe. When speaking up means you are going to get hurt it is best to stay quiet. One example of this could be when you see a fight. If you try to help the person who is getting beat up you could possibly get hurt too, it is better to tell someone about the fight and that way the people fighting can get help.In a situation like this it would be better to stay silent.
ReplyDeleteI feel that there are times when you should stay silent and times you should not stay silent. If there is someone that is going to get hurt from you saying something don't say it. If there is no one that is going to get hurt by what you have to say go ahead and say it. If the problem is major than you probably should speak up no matter what anyone thinks. But sometimes Staying silent is the best answer.
ReplyDeleteI feel that sometimes it can be best to speak out even if you will get hurt because of it. If you could save 5 people but you would get hurt it could be great. Sometimes there are people on the sidelines just waiting for someone to lead so they can follow.
DeleteI have much to say but I feel that this quote by a German pastor living in Nazi Germany at this time.
ReplyDeleteFirst they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.
-Martin Niemoller
I feel this states that how can one expect protection if he or she dose nothing to protect others?
Only a coward will remain silent when he feel a great misdeed is being preformed
I believe it depends on the situation. If it is something you know you can't handle or that you could get severely hurt in (like a gunfight or fire) then I think it is best to leave it be and call the police/ambulance instead. However if it were a friend or a family member in danger (just on instinct) you would go and try and help them. If the circumstance was a fist fight at your school, it may not be the smartest idea to intervene straight away however to some people it would be the best idea. The best way that (i think) it should be dealt with is by getting a teacher and then possibly intervening. As said before if the situation is minor and you know you won't get it harms way then it is best to step up, but if the situation looks as if it is more than you can handle then instead of stepping up you and putting yourself in danger, you should call the police, ambulance or someone you know who can give proper help (i.e a teacher).
ReplyDeleteI agree that the depth of the situation should be the deciding factor on weather you choose to intervene or not. I believe some situations are just too dangerous or personal to speak up in and you need to be careful about the consequences.
DeleteJulia, I completely agree with what you said. It all depends on the situation you are in and staying safe should be the first thing you think of before you go and try to get yourself into something. If it is dangerous, contact the right people who can deal with this kind of situation.
DeleteThis is exactly what I believe, and I like how you were thorough and gave examples for when you should do what. I think this is very well written and descriptive paragraph.
DeleteI agree as well, I believe it depends on the situation at hand but I think when in doubt stay silent. I think you should protect yourself first and then take into consideration anyone who might need help and decide from there.
DeleteI agree with your post, as you have to think about the consequences of the situation before you stand up for your beliefs. I think that you are correct and you have to think about putting yourself in danger.
DeleteI believe that there are times to say something and times not to. For intense if there is a situation that someone is getting hurt or they are going to get hurt, it is always good to speak out; in the right situation. If you will not get hurt your self it is always good to speak out. If you will get hurt it is always good to have a safe guard to protect your self. Which is shown in world war two when most countries spoke out to Germany and Hitler, they had a safe guard to fall back on.
ReplyDeleteEvan, I agree with you when you say that there are times when you should stay silent and speak up. When you say in a intense situation I think that it is very true. It is never okay when somebody is getting bullied and you do not speak up. Then other times it is not okay. Nice Job.
DeleteEvan, I agree with you that if someone is getting hurt, a person should speak out. I think that you make a good point that if speaking out would cause harm to you, then it may be better to stay silent. However, overall I believe that more harm than good is done by staying silent.
DeleteI like how you gave a very accurate example. I also agree with most of what you said, and enjoyed reading this. You have one part in their that contradicts itself though and did not really make sense.
DeleteI don't believe that there are any circumstances where it is best or even okay to stay silent despite how hard or difficult the situation is. I think that the true meaning of bravery is being able to stand up for those who can't stand up for themselves, to be a voice for those who have no voice. I think that if someone has the opportunity to help someone or a group of people who can't help themselves someone should take it, staying silent is never answer, silence--as we have seen thanks to history--has costs many people their lives. Silence is never the answer whether it be an issue like bullying or a controversial issue within a community. There was a quote that I remember that really sticks with me: "There comes a time when everyone must decide to do what is right and what is easy." Speaking up is never easy, but to me, it is always right.
ReplyDeleteI think you made a really good point about how speaking up can be very hard and difficult to do. However, speaking up in situations your not very knowledgeable about could lead to worse repercussions than you started with, so I think people need to be careful about the situations they choose to speak up in.
DeleteDear Hannah,
DeleteI agree with you, however, what if you were to be greatly punished for speaking up? In some places, you could be punished for speaking out against wrong or the government. In fact you could even be killed! Should you risk your life or dignity just to speak up against wrong?
Hannah, I completely agree that staying silent is never the answer. As you pointed out, many times, throughout history large groups of people lost their lives because others were silent. This is never the answer, although speaking out is a difficult choice.
DeleteI agree 100% with what you say. Silence is a problem, and speaking up is the solution. However, their may be circumstances where speaking up can go in vain. If you are warning people, or speaking for a group, and you lose that ability to speak up, then you condemning and hurting more than you are trying to help.
DeleteWe, as individuals, have always been taught to stand up for what we believe in, and to say what we want to say; freedom of speech. Although this may be true, i think there are times where it's best to remain silent and keep your thoughts to yourself. If your words, statements or thoughts will do more harm to the individual or situation itself compared to not saying anything at all, why should you instill that negativity by saying it? I think theres a specific time and place for saying something or remaining silent and although it may be hard to decipher when that time is right and for which one, it could potentially lead up to the best outcome of the situation. So why rub salt into the wound just for the sake of saying something? Obviously there are major problems in this world with freedom of speech and how people abuse this right. Of course no one deserves to be discriminated or abused against. The right thing to do is to stand up for someone when they are being wrongfully abused. But I think finding the balance between knowing when to speak up and remaining quiet is something that could potentially impact the world greatly and change how people with different perspectives interact. Everyone has some idea of their individual morals and i think one that everyone has in common is knowing when to speak up about something you know is ethically wrong, but its finding the balance between knowing whats right and whats wrong. Sometimes not saying anything at all can leave a stronger message, just them and their thoughts, and being unresponsive makes some realize that silence actually does have a sound.
ReplyDelete“The right word may be effective, but no word was ever as effective as a rightly timed pause.”
-Mark Twain
I agree. The mind is sometimes stronger than the mouth in volatile situations. There are situations where a more thoughtful and planned response is more effective than a "heat of the moment" approach.

ReplyDeleteI think that you should stay silent depending on the situation. If speaking up when something is wrong would help someone out then you should not stay silent. Speaking up when something is wrong could also make matters worse and you should not get involved. Also, in some situations getting someone to help you resolve the situation could also help rather than trying to do it by yourself. You should judge the situation before deciding if you should stay silent or not when something is wrong.
I feel like there are times to best stay silent. If your parents are having a conflict between them then you should leave them alone and not make it worst by you giving uour opinion. Also if you are bullying someone you should back away, apologize and stop the event all together. This why I think that there is always a time when you should remain silent
ReplyDeleteI feel like you should never be quiet in a moment of wrong doing. You have a right to apply your opinion in wrong situations. For example if you witness someone getting bullied you should speak up or to a teacher to stop the bullying. This why I think that you should never be silent. No matter who it is you should speak.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this because bullying has been a big problem lately and the victims are in need of help when getting bullied. If you speak up and tell the bully to stop then you will impact the bully and the victim.
DeleteSiri, what if the situation is dangerous? Most situations are okay to stand up in, but if you are putting yourself in danger I feel it is best to stay quiet. It may be rude to say but, your safety is more important than standing up for someone.
DeleteSiri, I agree with your post because bullying is a very big issue and it is right to speak up for that person getting bullied than watching him or her getting bullied.
DeleteI both agree and disagree with your post. Yes, standing up for yourself and others is great, but sometimes there are times when staying silent would be a better choice. If you or a loved one could be put in danger by you speaking up the I would suggest keeping your mouth closed.
DeleteI disagree, what if you could get hurt in this situation would you still speak up? I think you should decide the way you will handle a situation depending on what could happen to you or the other person.
DeleteSiri, I agree that when you are being bullied you should stand up for yourself or others that are being bullied. However, I think it is also true that there are circumstances that you should stay quiet like when you are in a life threatening situation.
DeleteI disagree and agree with you. I agree that it is important to speak up for others. Though I don't think that is always the right choice. For example what if the consequence for speaking up is getting others killed. That is why we must constantly thing about our choices in life because our actions don't just affect us they affect those around us.
DeleteI think that keeping silent may depend on the consequences of speaking out what you really think. If you think that one of your grades are unfair, and go to a teacher to discuss it, you won't receive much punishment, probably none at all. So, keeping silent about that, would not be a good idea. However, if you are speaking out against the government, and may receive a punishment of death, you would have to consider your consequences in order to make the decision to speak out. I am not saying that you should not speak out, however, you have to be aware of the consequences and decide whether you want to risk something for speaking out.
ReplyDeleteI think that the situation, dictates whether you should be silent. If speaking out would put your life in danger, you can choose to or not to speak out. If speaking out would not put your life in danger in any way, then you owe it to the people that are being treated unfairly to speak out and try to help them. There are times when speaking out might put others lives in danger, and you should not endanger the lives of others because you are stubborn or want to help. There are other ways to help people without putting them in danger.
ReplyDeleteI think you are correct that speaking out may put others in danger, but what if you could save others by speaking out? If you could save fifty people at the cost of ten it may be better, but it would be a horribly hard decision.
DeleteI agree with you. Breaking out, and speaking what you believe to be true is situational. If you were to put more at risk than what is at stake, than you would be doing something very rashly.
DeleteSound draws attention to the source. Staying silent when aware of something bad is not always wrong. In situations in which more lives are at risk than the one who is at risk, silence is necessary. However, people need to speak up to threats when they positives outweigh the negatives. Standing up for the right cause is crucial in many situations because people need to be aware of the circumstances. I believe that silence is a gift, and most humans do not use it as much as they should.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Eric. There are situations where you would do more harm than good if you were to stay silent. You could hurt more people than you could save by not staying silent.
DeleteThere are, of course, situations in which it is best to stay silent, rather than burst out, and state what you truly believe. If you were to say that there was never a time to stay silent, that you always have to speak out, then I would like you to live by those words. Even when, others are at stake, such as loved ones, or your friends, where if you chose to speak out, they would be hared, or you yourself would be harmed. There are situations where you are meant not to say anything such as when others are at stake, but rather stay silent. And there are times to speak out, such as when someone is being bullied, or something against humanity is happening. It is always up to who, and how many are at risk. That is why it is situational.
ReplyDeleteTo me, I don't think you should speak up when something is wrong. Yes, it clearly is the right thing to do but it can get you into a lot of trouble. It also might get you the death penalty which nobody wants! There are also some situations in which speaking up can save somebody's life, therefore it is right to speak up if lives can be saved from it. Since the Jews were not welcomed at all, the odds of them not getting punished were very low.
ReplyDeleteYes there are times to stay quiet when something is wrong. For example if you are not witnessing or did not witness a issue you did not need to do anything about it. Also if the matter could hurt a persons feeling you should stay quiet. An example for that would be if the person is doing something wrong and it is only hurting a few people mentally it is fine to stay quiet if they do not know what they are doing.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion there are times that you should stay silent when you see something wrong. If the government is doing something wrong and you speak up you could be imprisoned or killed. If you are in jail or dead you won't be able to stand up for your cause. It would be much better to silently try to stop the injustice happening around you. There are times when speaking up is better, but I find that it is generally better to stay silent.
ReplyDeleteI think that there are times when you should be quiet when something is wrong, but only if the situation is extreme. If you see wrong, you should be the person to bring order and goodness and correct that wrongdoing. You should do this 99% of the time. However, there are times when you are up against a more powerful enemy than yourself and there is nothing that you can do without hurting yourself or other innocent. However, other than this small exception, you should try your best to do the right thing or bring justice and restore order.
ReplyDeleteYou should speak up for what you believe in, especially if people are being hurt by something you are against. You should say what you think as long as it is just. Speaking up can potentially move a whole bunch of people to speak up as well. If you are punished severely for speaking justly, then it can move others to stop that punishment. If you die for what you believe, then you die a hero and a martyr instead of living as a coward. For it hurts less to regret what you said than wishing you could have said something.
ReplyDeleteI think there is no excuse to stay silent when you see something wrong, unless you are the one doing the wrong thing. You have to go to someone in authority or someone who can make a difference. If you don't tell someone that some something bad is happening, then what will that help? Nothing, it will just make you just equally as guilty as the person who messed up. You should never stay silent when something bad is happening.
ReplyDeleteTo me, when something is wrong you should always speak up and stand up for what is right. However, if somebody was in a particularly dangerous situation then staying silent is the right option. If speaking up can help somebody than it is the right option. When the Jews were being punished some did not speak up because the odds of the punishment stopping was low.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think that you should at times stay silent if you see that something is wrong. I mean if you see something going on that is not right, and you think that you can handle it, then speak up. The other hand is that if you really are not in control of the situation, and you don't know what is going on, then why speak up. You do not need to barge into everything, and at times if you do speak up, then you may get in serious trouble you do. There are situations where you can make a difference, and others where you can not. You may save someones life if you do speak up, or you may effect your life in a bad way.
ReplyDeleteI think that there are times that it is best to stay silent when something is wrong. For example, when the person doing wrong is uncontrollable, it would be best to stay out of their way or you might add some fuel to their fire. That would not be good for you or the person that is suffering. After that is over, you should find the person doing wrong and try to get some sense into him/her. Of course, if a person is going to die, you should interfere at your own risk unless you want risk your own neck.
ReplyDeleteI would think that it is always the right thing to say something and never stay silent. It would be hard. You should always do the right thing even if you do not like the person. You should always try to do is the greater good. If someone is in danger, I believe that you should always try to help and not say silent. You should always help your peers and not just think about yourself.
ReplyDeleteJonmikal, the right thing might be to stay silent. Maybe acting out could put more of your peers in danger.
DeleteThere are many times where it would benefit someone to stay quiet. For example when two people are in a life and death conflict and you chose to stay silent because you fear you may be hurt as well. Although there are many situations where it would be useful to speak up when something is wrong It could possibly cause more harm then good. My opinion on this topic depends on the situation. It would be more useful to stay silent when you see something that is wrong if I had to take a side.
ReplyDeleteNathan I couldnt agree with you more. Especially when you talked about life and death situations. I think we value our life far to much for us to be able to give it up in that sort of situation.
DeleteI think standing up for what you believe is very important and necessary, but sometimes it just is not your place to interfere with a situation and it is best to stay silent. In a situation where someone is getting bullied, I think there should be no question weather you should speak up for them. In situations where you know you can make a positive impact with no consequences, you should always voice your opinion and do whatever you can to help the situation. However, some things are too personal for you to voice your opinion on, even if you think it will help. What you say trying to help the person could be dangerous if you do not have much knowledge on the situation or do not know the persons feelings. So overall, it depends on the specific situation weather you should speak up or not.
ReplyDeleteI think that there are some time when you should stay quiet when something bad is happening. If speaking up could get you hurt or killed, then I think that you should just stay quiet. If the same problem keeps on happening, then you should take the problem to someone that can handle the problem better. If there is a problem that you could solve by just saying somethings to the people that are causing the problem, then you should speak up. I think that there are sometimes that you should speak up, but other times when you should just stay quiet.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is a time when you can stay silent when something is wrong. If someone with a gun is in your house, you wont shout, talk, or make noise. However it is not always a good thing to stay silent. If your friend gets hit in the head and becomes unconscious. You would run and tell people to try to get help rather than stay silent and wait for him to wake up. There are times when you should stay silent when something is wrong, and times when you should tell somebody.
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not think that there are times where you should stay silent when you see something wrong. If you see something wrong, you should speak up and say something. You should always stand up to what you think is wrong. If you do not speak up, then the problem could become worse and hurt even more people than it was originally. If you speak up, you could save a whole lot of people from the thing that is wrong. Always stand up for what you believe in, and go against what you don't.
ReplyDeleteAlso consider, Matthew, that the problem and the hate could grow worse if you do act out. The person doing wrong could have more reason to do wrong.
DeleteI do agree with what you have said but you also need to contemplate the downsides. You or somebody innocent could get severely injured if you speak up.
DeleteI believe there are times when you should be quiet when something is not right. Sometimes there are stuff you should not get involved in because it can harm you and might get yourself wound up in big trouble. If the situation is extreme, for example if someone has a gun, you should stay silent and get help instead of saying something that could backfire. On the other hand if the situation is not extreme, you should stick up for what is right especially if someone is being harmed.
ReplyDeleteI do think that in some cases, it is perfectly fine to stay silent. In some situations, it is perfectly fine to speak up. Speaking up in extreme problems could get you killed or imprisoned. Other cases, it could actually help someone. If you speak up for someone being bullied, you could help them. Speaking up against the government could get you possibly killed or imprisoned. As long as it's something you believe is right, it is okay to speak up. It would be best to speak when you think you should that to regret not saying anything before.
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not think that you should stay quiet when you see people doing something wrong. When you see something wrong you should speak out and try to stop the problem. If you do not speak out the small problem that someone does can become a lot bigger. With this it can affect a lot more people. If a whole lot of people speak up the problem will stop for good.
ReplyDeleteI think that there is a time in which you should be silent and a time in which you should speak up when something is wrong. I believe that no one should be bullied or made fun of for who they are. I think that in most cases, if you see someone doing something wrong to another person you should do the right thing and stand up for the person. However, I feel that some situations can be dangerous and your safety should be your first priority. Overall, I think that you should speak up for whats right, unless it endangers your life.
ReplyDeleteThere are times when you should be quiet when others are doing wrong. If you have no reasonable power to stop a person from doing the wrong thing, then you should let them proceed. This only qualifies if no one will be hurt by their actions. By speaking out you could actually put more people in danger. Although cases when you should stand by and watch evil occur are few and far between, they do exist.
ReplyDeleteI feel like there are some instances in which you should stay silent when something wrong is happening. I think that if it is a small thing like bullying in school, or something along those lines, then you should definitely speak up, No one should be punished for who they are and people should stand up for them. However, if it is a situation where you are putting yourself in danger, then you should probably stay out of it. Also, you should consider if you are making the situation worse by getting involved.
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not think that it is right to stay silent when you see something wrong. If something bad happens you should stand up for what you believe. I do not believe that someone should be treated unfairly and ridiculed. If there are consequences at least you know that you stood up for what was right. If you stand up for what is right other people will see that and they will stand up for what they think is right too. We deserve to be treated right and if you have a chance to do what is right then we should take that chance. We would want people to do the same for us
ReplyDeleteI think that it is never right to stay silent when something is wrong. If you truly believe that something is wrong, you should never limit yourself to staying quiet. It is your right as a person to have free speech and if you feel that you need to speak up, there is no reason you should stay quiet. By speaking up, you can help the problem and encourage others to do the same. Once enough people speak up, that thing you believed was wrong in the first place can actually be changed for the better.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think that there are certain times where something bad is happening and you should not speak up. I think that most of the time that you should speak up is something is happening that is not right and you cant make a change. If nobody else is speaking up, you will have to make that change and do what is right. You do not have to get involved in everything bad because that might not end up well for you. Most of the time, it is okay.
ReplyDeleteNo, I do not think it is okay to stay silent when something is wrong. I say this because when their is something wrong you should step up and say whats wrong. If you so not speak up ten the problem or situation could get worse over time. You have the right to speak up or stand up for that person. If someone is getting bullied you should stand up for what is right. Overall you should never stay silent when something is wrong.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there are some times where you should stay silent when you see something that is wrong. In these situations there should be danger present if not, you should not be quiet. Standing up for what you believing is very important but when you are put in danger than it is best to stay quiet. If someone is being harassed at school, it will benefit someone if you stood up for them. If there is someone being harassed on the side of the street that is not a safe circumstance, it would be best to not get into it and call the police so your life is not put into danger.
ReplyDeleteI think that staying silent when something bad happens always seems to bite you in the behind. Like lying, not speaking up can lead to consequences which can get you into more trouble than you may have had in the first place. Although, I do think that there are certain times when not saying anything is the right thing to do. For example, if a family member makes a mistake or commits a small crime, I wouldn't tell on them because they are my family and I would hate to lose them and I know they would do the same to me. Another example could be when it is a dangerous situation and speaking out could get you inured or killed.
ReplyDeleteThere is no time that you should keep silent if something is wrong. This is because if you do not take care of the problem and get help, then your problem could get worst. Even though there could be a consequence in speaking out, it is the right thing to do. For example, if somebody is getting bullied then you need to tell an adult to help before something extremely bad might happen. Lastly, speaking out can keep people safe. If something is wrong, then you should speak out instead of keeping quiet.
ReplyDeleteI think that if something is wrong you should definitely speak up. If something is wrong with a situation someone should say something to fix it. Many people will stay quiet when something is wrong because they are afraid of getting punished if they say the wrong thing. Sometimes it could be scary to speak up but in the end speaking up is the right thing to do. Speaking up can is the right thing to do but there could be consequences.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it is good to keep quiet in certain situations. If you keep quiet, it can keep you safe if someone else is getting in trouble. If you were a slave, and one of the other slaves were getting whipped, and you started talking, then you slave owner may also get mad at you. However, if your friend was in trouble, and you were actually the one who did, and you told the person getting your friend in trouble, then it would save your friend. Your friend would be happy, so this would be a good situation to do this, even though you may get in trouble if you truly liked your friend.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking up takes confidence, but reporting a crime is a whole different level of confidence. Law officials could believe you, or they could possibly punish you for lying. That may be one of the reasons behind leaving an anonymous tip for a crime. So, I believe that you should speak up when you see something wrong, unless you have a chance of being either injured or killed.
ReplyDeleteI think there are best times to stay silent when you see something wrong. If you are putting your self in a situation where it could cause you an injury I think it would be best to stay out of the situation. However, if somebody is getting hurt in this situation I think it would be great to stick up for the situation, no matter what the result. Therefore, I believe it is important to stick up, but it depends on the scenario.
ReplyDeleteThere are many times when you should be quiet especially when someone is doing something wrong. If someone is doing something wrong, you should respond in a helpful way. That helpful way could be being quiet so that person around you is in a way getting a signal to stop what they are doing and fixing that problem. By not responding, if tells that person to keep on doing that wrong action.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there are times when staying silent is the best thing to do, even when you know something is wrong. If the situation was putting your life or your loved ones' lives in danger, then to keep them and you safe, stay quiet. This would only be if it was physically not possible to arrest them, like a terrorist group or the military. However, if the person or people are able to be arrested, but still threaten you to stay quiet, tell an official, because that one person can not do anything from jail.
ReplyDeleteI believe that there are a lot of times when it is best to stay silent. There are two situations. First, if your life is in danger or you could get in big trouble then you should stay silent. Second, If you are endangering others you should stay silent. On the other hand though if you believe strongly in your cause then you should not stay silent. It really just depends on the person. Terrorist believe so strongly in their cause they kill themselves for it. You have to have a good conscious. You have to know when to say something or stay silent.
ReplyDeletePeople should not stay silent when they see something that is wrong. For example, during the Holocaust, many people watched the Jews being killed or tortured. If those people would have opposed what was happening then it is possible that not as many Jews would have been killed. In addition, if individuals would have spoken up immediately then the Holocaust may never have occurred. From my perspective, if you see a heinous act then you should never stay silent.
ReplyDeleteI think that staying silent, in some situations is a better option than speaking up. In a situation where you or a loved one could be harmed by speaking up I would definintly stay silent. Yes, standing up for yourself and others is good, but your safety is more important. In conclusion I think that keeping quiet in some situations may be a better choice.
ReplyDeleteDepends on the situation if you should be silent or not. I know when we started reading the first chapter of Night the one teacher waited till he got back to speak up instead of saying something at the camp. To be honest I think that is the best and safest way to speak up for something that is wrong. Sticking up for something at the moment of it happening can be the difference between life and death. Like the teacher in the story. In the end through it all depends on the situation and what is happening.
ReplyDeleteI think in some cases it is better to be quiet. If you are a witness to a crime and they threaten your lives or other people's lives if you speak. I think there are cases but there are very few. In most cases I think it is better to speak up and try to help other people.
ReplyDeleteI do not think that it is right to stay silent. You should always stick up for yourself. Staying silent will never help you out. Everyone should speak up for what they think of. Staying silent will not help the problem out. Staying silent can actually make it worse. If people would talk, and stick up for what they believe it can make the problem better. Staying silent will make the problem worse.
ReplyDeleteI think there are cases when it is better to stay silent. If your life is threatened because you were a witness to a crime or some other people would be killed if you told I think it is better to be silent. In most cases though it is better to stick up for other people and attempt to help them.
ReplyDeleteI think there are times were it is best to be silent, and times to speak up. It all depends on the situation and how it affects others and yourself. For example, if someone is being bullied, speak up for them, you will positively affect both the lives of the victim and the offender. There are also times where it is completely necessary to keep silent. If someone does something as simple to throwing a surprise birthday party, your best option is to keep you mouth shut. Speaking up may hurt people that you love and are close to, silence is often the best option. Keeping silent, you will almost never regret it. Speaking up, you frequently will.
ReplyDeleteI Agree with your points, Megan Patterson. We were all taught to speak up for what we believe, but I think sometimes actions show your feeling and comfort other more than words do. People frequently abuse the right to freedom of speech, and most of the time, their opinion isn't needed and or necessary.
ReplyDeleteI liked your post, Evan Farrow. Your statement is completely true and your point is well-stated. Even though it worked for people in history, it also kept them on the safe side to keep quiet. It is just the situation you are in to decide what will result in the best outcome.
ReplyDeleteI think that standing up for someone is a great thing, but it all depends on the situation. If there is a situation where you may be hurt, sometimes it is worth it, but sometimes it may not be worth getting hurt if the situation is not that serious. Sometimes, it is not your place to get involved. Sometimes things are just not your business. I think that helping someone is always a good thing but you should consider the situation.
ReplyDeleteThere can be times when it is best to stay silent. If you can make a big difference and can not afford to be killed you must be quiet at least until you are ready. Although if you something is wrong and you can make a difference right away then do something. Just don't speak out if nothing good will come out of it.
ReplyDeleteI do not think it is right to stay silent when something bad is happening. It is wrong to let something bad to continue, and to stop it, the first step is to speak up. If you do not tell someone no one will be prepared, and no one will be able to prevent it. However, if the present situation is bad, wait for the chance where the information will not go in vain. If you are prevented from speaking what you know, it is the same thing as not saying anything.
ReplyDeleteNo, because something wrong needs to be stopped. The right thing is always best. If something wrong is happening its your job to stop it. People should not just stand by and let it happen.
ReplyDeleteWhen someone is doing something wrong I think you should speak up. You should because if no one does its only gonna get worse for the person being hurt because the person hurting them will see that no one is doing anything about it so he will continue to do and possibly do even worse stuff. Despite this there are times when you should stay silent for example when Elie Wiesel first entered the camps and found out that people were being burned alive and as a result the people around him were going to attack the German soldiers and try to escape. If those people had not been calmed down by the ones around them and had attacked the Germans would have most likely shot all of them as punishment of their actions and not trying to stop them. So when you see something wrong happening around you, you have to consider those around you and if you actions will affect them.
